My husband and I are both State employees and thankful for our jobs. However, we don’t understand why only State employees are expected to help with the burden of our State’s finances.
Instead of decreasing the State’s employees’ wages we believe that the entire Nevada population should be a part of the solution with tax increases. State employee step increases and COLA increases can no longer be counted on–isn’t that enough of a burden on employees of Nevada? Many people here enjoy living in a State that does not have a State income tax, but this may not be feasible any longer. Possibly it is time to make a change and look at this or other methods to bring in revenue. Sales tax rates could be adjusted. These are not popular political issues, but how realistic is it to have one group of people (the employees) make tremendous adjustments financially. We recently read a document entitled “Fool’s Gold The Silver State’s Tax Structure: Inadequate and Inequitable” by the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada. This document was well done and offered many solutions.
